- Quick Instructions for using PC-TEXT Analysis Toolbox
-
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- PC-TEXT Analysis Toolbox creates a friendly working environment for
- performing textual analysis on a PC /XT/AT or close compatible running
- under PC/MS-DOS 2.x or 3.x. This software is designed to reduce those
- computer related problems that might plague the beginning computer user /
- student / scholar who wants to use the computer to aid in text analysis.
-
- PC-TEXT will NOT analyze text. Any analysis or analytical decisions must
- be performed by the user. But PC-TEXT will make the job much easier,
- especially for the person just starting out.
-
-
- You have probably received PC-TEXT one of three ways:
-
- A. The most likely way is the shared disk. If you are reading this
- file on that disk right now, and the following files are also on
- this disk:
-
- PCTEXT ARC 244608 Compressed PC-TEXT files
- FUNKY COM 384 required by WORKDISK.BAT
- PKXARC COM 9729 removes files from archive
- QUERY COM 384 required by WORKDISK.BAT
- SLASH COM 256 required by WORKDISK.BAT
- WORKDISK BAT 12652 easy-install program
- README 1ST 9107 this file
- CONFIG SYS 89 PC-TEXT system configuration
-
- then you should have few problems.
-
- B. You downloaded a large archived (compressed) file from a remote
- system or a bulletin board. You have de-compressed that .ARC file
- and you see the above files when you list the directory. If your
- downloading had few hitches (errors), you should have all the
- necessary files to make a working disk.
-
- C. You have ordered the latest release of PC-Text Analysis Toolbox
- from the PC-TEXT project. Again, the disk you received should
- contain the files listed above.
-
- WHAT TO DO FIRST; MAKING A BACKUP. Make a backup copy of this disk. If
- you do not know how to make a backup copy, consult you DOS reference
- manual under DISKCOPY. The procedure is simple, but if your computer has
- only one disk drive, it is probably too small to be able to take
- advantage of the PC-TEXT software. On a 2-floppy system, place your boot
- disk (with the file called DISKCOPY.EXE on it) in drive A.
- Type: DISKCOPY a: b:
- When prompted, place your original PC-TEXT disk in drive A and a blank
- disk in drive B. Then press the <Enter> key. Your Backup copy should be
- made. If you have problems, consult the DOS manual.
-
- WHAT TO DO NEXT; CHECKING PCTEXT.ARC. Just to be sure that you have
- received a legitimate copy of PC-TEXT, look at the byte count for
- PCTEXT.ARC when you do a directory listing. If it reads greater or
- smaller than 244608 bytes, you probably have a damaged copy. Contact the
- address below for the latest release:

-
- Enclose a check for $10 made out to:
-
- "W. Va. COGS Foundation"
-
- to cover copying, postage and handling.
-
- WHAT TO DO NEXT; MAKING A WORKING DISK.
-
- On a 2-floppy disk system:
-
- 1. format two disks; one of the disks should be formatted with
- the "/S", or "system" option so that it becomes "bootable,"
- that is, your computer will provide you with the "A>" or
- system prompt if the computer is turned on with this disk
- in drive A. Consult your DOS manual under FORMAT if you
- do not know how to format a disk.
-
- 2. One of the files on this disk is called WORKDISK.BAT. It is
- your easy-install program. Place the disk formatted without
- the "/S" option in drive A and your copy of the PCTEXT disk
- in drive B. Type "WORKDISK" and press <Enter>. From this
- point on you can use the WORKDISK program as your guide.
- Type the <F1> key. All of the PC-TEXT document files,
- including PC-TEXT's manual, will be extracted from the
- archive, decompressed and placed on the disk in drive A.
-
- 3. Next, place the disk formatted with the "/S" option in
- drive A. Now type the <F2> key. All of Pc-TEXT's working
- files will be transferred to your disk in drive A.
-
- 4. Next, place your DOS system disk in drive B and copy
- FIND.EXE from your DOS system disk to your new working disk
- in drive A.
-
- 5. With your working disk on drive A, to start you need to log
- on to drive A and type "PCTEXT" <Enter>.
-
-
- On a HARD DISK drive system:
-
- (assuming your hard disk is designated as drive C:)
-
- 1. Place your copy of the PC-TEXT disk in drive A, type
- "WORKDISK" and press <Enter>. Type the <F3> key.
- The easy-install program will create the necessary
- directories on the hard disk and move all files into their
- appropriate places. To complete the process, copy one of
- your DOS utilities, FIND.EXE, to th PCTEXT directory on
- drive A.
-
- (if your hard disk is designated other than drive C:)
-
- 1. Log on to your root directory and create a directory called
- PCTEXT. Change directories (log on) to this new directory
- and create a sub-directory called DOCS.
-
- 2. While still logged onto the PCTEXT directory, place your
- copy of the PC-TEXT disk in drive A. Then type the
- following exactly (press <Enter> after each line):
-
- A:PKXARC A:PCTEXT.ARC -*.EXE
- A:PKXARC A:PCTEXT.ARC -*.COM
- A:PKXARC A:PCTEXT.ARC -*.HLP
- A:PKXARC A:PCTEXT.ARC -*.TBL
- A:PKXARC A:PCTEXT.ARC -*.TXT
- A:PKXARC A:PCTEXT.ARC -*.BAT
-
- then type: CHDIR DOCS
-
- followed by:
-
- A:PKXARC A:PCTEXT.ARC -*.DOC
- A:PKXARC A:PCTEXT.ARC -*.MAN
-
- 3. Change directories again by typing:
-
- CHDIR \PCTEXT
-
- then copy FIND.EXE to your working directory by typing:
-
- COPY \FIND.EXE
-
- If, for some reason, FIND.EXE is not copied to the PCTEXT
- working directory, locate the file on your DOS system
- disk and, using the method outlined in your DOS manual,
- copy it to your PCTEXT directory.
-
-
- WHAT TO DO NEXT; HAVE A LOOK AT THE MANUAL. Before starting up PC-TEXT, it
- is best to have a look at the PC-TEXT MANUAL. This guide explains a few
- things about PC-TEXT that you need to know.
-
- The best way to read the MANUAL is to let PC-TEXT help you. Log on to the
- disk or directory with the working files, type "PCTEXT" and press <Enter>.
- Next, select option #3, VIEW /PAGE/ WINDOW FILES, on the main menu, and
- when the prompt window opens, choose #2, BI-DIRECTIONAL PAGER. When asked
- for a file name, (on a floppy drive system) place your "Documents" disk on
- drive B and type "B:PCTEXT.MAN, or (on a hard drive system) type
- DOCS\PCTEXT.MAN. Use the PgDn, PgUp, Home and End keys to work your way
- around in the MANUAL.
-
-
- IMPORTANT ADDENDUM:
-
- PC-TEXT requires that your computer be configured in specific ways to
- offer optimum performance. Under some conditions it is possible that PC-
- TEXT may have several files open at one time. It is important that your
- computer's configuration reflects these conditions. The CONFIG.SYS file on
- this disk contains the lines necessary for successful operation. If you do
- not have a CONFIG.SYS file either on your "boot" disk or, if you have a
- hard disk system, in your root directory, feel free to use this one. There
- is nothing in it which can harm your machine, though it might help your
- other programs. If you do have a CONFIG.SYS file, check it to make sure
- that the necessary lines are present. If they are not, please add them.
